In October 2023, a neglected pub in Barrow-in-Furness reopened with a brand-new purpose. Thanks to a team of 60 passionate volunteers, The Black Swan was transformed into a not-for-profit, community-led space - complete with a theatre, coffee shop, activity hub, and safe place for all. From mindfulness to musicals, this remarkable transformation has built more than a business: it's built a family.
The Black Swan team wasted no time bringing their vision to life. Within months, they had:
- Refurbished the entire venue with the help of 60 volunteers.
- Rebuilt the stage and redesigned the space into a community theatre.
- Installed accessible toilets, baby change facilities, and a kitchenette.
- Brought a disused kitchen up to standard, now achieving a 5-star hygiene rating.
- Created a warm, inclusive coffee shop area that doubles as a meeting space.
The venue now runs:
- Wellbeing and creative workshops
- Free family holiday activities
- Mindful colouring and open ‘chatter’ table sessions
- Bingo, quizzes, theatre performances, choir rehearsals, and exhibitions
- Youth and adult theatre workshops
- ‘Stars in Our Eyes’ events raising funds for different charities
- A People’s Choir that sings in care homes, churches, supermarkets, and parties
- Free internet and workspace access for students and remote workers
The Black Swan operates as a Community Interest Company (CIC), meaning all profits go back into community projects.
The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. The venue is described as a “safe, welcoming, and joyful” space. The community has responded with ideas, donations, and enthusiastic participation. Groups now meet regularly for everything from book clubs to business meetings, while the theatre space is in constant demand.
The Black Swan is not just a pub – it’s a place of purpose. From theatre and craft to coffee and community care, its team has created something extraordinary. This is a venue that sings, shines, and serves, driven entirely by the desire to uplift its town and empower its people.
