Publican Beth Robinson and her team have put fundraising at the centre of the pub since 2013. Cowtonbury is a two-day music festival where all proceeds go to charity, with suppliers helping out to keep costs down.
Cowtonbury has helped fund a cancer treatment centre at the local hospital, refurbished a room for families of patients receiving palliative care, and built a ‘secret garden’ in the hospital grounds where patients and families can spend time together. The team maintains and replants the garden throughout the year.
Last year the pub also took on the Macmillan darts challenge, with professional players joining a 14-hour ‘Ally Pally Night’ of darts, fancy dress and games in aid of Macmillan services in North Yorkshire.
The pub’s team gives its time on charity event days. Beth also chairs the primary school’s friends committee, works with the village church, sponsors local football and cricket teams, and volunteers with the community-owned village shop.
Cowtonbury now supports community palliative care teams across North Yorkshire with equipment and one-off requests that help patients and families. Next on the list is a larger family suite at the hospital.
Driven by Beth’s belief that everyone deserves dignity at the end of life, The Beeswing shows what a small rural pub can achieve when a whole community rallies behind it.
