Pontardawe Inn: Fundraising, Pride and the Welsh Language

Introduction

Pontardawe Inn has been named a finalist in the Community Fundraising Hero – Wales category of the PubAid Community Pub Hero Awards 2026. Since taking over in 2022, Sion Partridge and Michelle have made the pub a meeting place for the whole community.

What they did

The pub has been fundraising for Wales Air Ambulance through hamper raffles at Christmas, Easter and Mother’s Day, with generous support from customers.

Its annual Pride event, now in its third year, has become a highlight of the local calendar, with funds shared between local schools and groups such as Pantry Pontardawe food bank and My Green Valley litter pickers. The pub has also supported Tŷ Olwen hospice.

With Menter Iaith Castell-nedd, the pub runs free ‘Sesiwn Strymio’ Welsh-language music sessions and added a Welsh-language jam day to its festival.

The community reaction

During a power cut, the pub opened its doors so people could charge phones, get hot water and stay warm. When the pub later flooded, the community repaid the favour with sandbags and help.

Impact

The pub hosts groups from the Royal British Legion to the Yarn Birds and Night Owls crochet group. This year it is also fundraising for the local brass band, a young kickboxer competing for Wales and Team GB, and a customer volunteering in Malawi.

Summary

Michelle was recently named a Local Community Hero, and the pair say any recognition belongs to the whole community. Pontardawe Inn shows that a pub is about the people, not the four walls.
