Riverside Sports Bar: Newport’s Home for Every Fan

Introduction

Riverside Sports Bar in Newport has been named a finalist in the Community Sport Hero – Wales category of the PubAid Community Pub Hero Awards 2026. Opposite Rodney Parade, the bar has built its reputation on using sport to bring people together.

What they did

Riverside sponsors local grassroots clubs and athletes, including Newport Corinthians, Newport HSOB, Newport County and local boxer Nathan Howells. It donates vouchers to schools and clubs as raffle prizes and hosts celebrations for teams such as Pill Harriers RFC under-15s and Newport Corries under-11s.

On match days the bar welcomes home and away fans of Newport County and the Dragons. This year it was the official pub for Caernarfon Town FC when they travelled south and won the JD Welsh Cup. The bar is also an official Her Game Too partner, supports local sports podcasts, and has added new darts boards, a darts team and extra pool tables.

The community reaction

Director Daniel Harris and the team say everyone is welcome as long as they respect others. Fans of all ages and backgrounds feel at home here.

Impact

Riverside gives grassroots clubs a welcoming place to hold events and gives back to local sport through sponsorship. Daniel is also keen to help connect the local council with the community around the bar.

Summary

Built through hard work and community spirit, Riverside Sports Bar shows how a pub can use sport to connect people rather than divide them.
