Diggers has long been a community base for supporters of Heart of Midlothian FC. It has hosted community fundraising events in support of the club and continues to sponsor players and invest in local sport.
Match days bring thousands of visitors to the streets around Tynecastle. Working with the supporters’ group Jambo’s Kickback, the pub funded and installed a public-access defibrillator and trained its staff to respond in an emergency.
Owner Kevin McGhee also sources the pub’s well-known pies from local butchers, supporting other independent businesses in the area.
Regulars are fiercely loyal to the pub and its team. Kevin, a lifelong Hibs fan, has won the respect of a neighbourhood full of Hearts supporters and helped bring people together across old rivalries.
The defibrillator and trained staff give residents and visiting families real peace of mind on busy match days. Diggers also gives grandparents, parents and children a place to spend time together.
The Athletic Arms shows what happens when a pub steps up for its neighbours. Its win recognises years of practical support for sport, safety and community life in Gorgie and Dalry.
