When The Railway Inn in a small village on the outskirts of Lincoln closed during the Covid-19 pandemic, many feared it would be lost forever. But thanks to the vision and dedication of locals Dave and Mike, the pub was brought back to life. First run on a temporary basis, then purchased outright in 2024, The Railway Inn has been transformed into a bustling, inclusive, and multi-purpose community space that has raised over £11,000 for good causes, revitalised the village, and become the very definition of a community pub.
Dave and Mike have turned the pub into a beacon of rural community life, offering everything from regular social events to vital services and charitable initiatives:
- Community Events and Support:
- Monthly Ladies’ Nights, Gents’ Evenings, Charity Quiz Nights, and a large annual Air Ambulance fundraiser.
- Hosted its first wedding reception, as well as wakes, baby showers, birthdays, and christenings.
- Installed a 100-person marquee to accommodate live bands, fundraisers, and free use by local charities.
- Invites pop-up food vans to support local traders and diversify the offer.
- Community Services:
- Installed a defibrillator, sponsored a guide dog, and support a local motorbike rider.
- Created a relationship with a local butcher following the closure of the village Post Office, now offering goods to residents from the pub biweekly.
- Hosts a local bike group’s toy and Easter egg runs, offering free tea and coffee and collecting donations.
- Outreach and Accessibility:
- Distributes printed leaflets and advertises in local magazines and notice boards to reach elderly residents.
- Developed an upgraded campsite to bring in outside revenue and support the pub’s sustainability.
The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with locals describing the pub as the village’s lifeline. Comments on their Facebook page such as “we are very lucky to have such a wonderful pub with a fabulous team” and “made such a difference to the Railway and village community” reflect the deep appreciation residents feel.
The Railway Inn has restored community spirit in an area with limited public transport and few social venues. It has brought people together, created employment opportunities, and raised substantial funds for local causes. Its consistency—opening the same days and times each week—has made it a reliable presence in people’s lives.
From pandemic closure to community ownership, The Railway Inn has rewritten its story with purpose, generosity, and perseverance. Dave and Mike’s efforts have helped create not just a pub, but a living, breathing part of the village’s future.
